What
the heck is Social Media Networking anyway?
You
want the long explanation... or the short one? Ah, just
as I thought... the short!
Okay
then...here we go!
I'll
begin explaining what Social Media is first. Social Media
is very simply any tool or site which allows interaction
with its users! If you can comment on a site, interact
and engage in conversation with others, or even re-arrange
the design of a site…then that’s Social Media!
Keeping up so far? GREAT!
Here's the networking part.... this is users taking those tools to make connections
and build relationships! By using tools such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn,
article writing, YouTube, podcasting and blogging people make connections with
other people who have similar interests and backgrounds. Still
with me?

Your Facebook
profile is one of two very important parts to start you off on the
right Social Networking foot!
It is what people read to learn about who you are and what you do.
It literally becomes your online brochure.
Decide on what information you want people to know about you. Remember,
you can only make a first impression once so make sure you don't add
anything inappropriate.
If you are
using Facebook for business networking, make sure you tellpeople what
you do and your website address. If you WANT people to contact you
directly and not just through Facebook's messaging system, then add
your email address and phone number.
So, read
over your profile and make sure you have all the pertinent information
about your business.
Your name
What you do
How can
people learn more about you or contact you
Tip: Re-visit
your profile occasionally to update or to revise. You also want to
make sure your links still work properly. (technology is notperfect)
2. Your
Picture:
The main
reason people go onto Facebook is to meet and connect with new people,
build relationships and, for some, do business! And we all know
that people work with other people with whom they know, like and trust!
So, even
BEFORE reading your profile, the first thing people see is your picture!
How do you suppose people can come to know, like and trust you if they
can't see you? If you are simply a ghostly, white silhouette on their
screen then you are missing the point. And, remember... it IScalled
FACEBOOK after all!
Upload a
professionally taken photo or if that is not an option right now, find
an appropriate photo which puts you in the best light possible.
Do not upload
photos of:
Your
pets
Your
children or any other member of your family
Your logo
Anything
that is NOT YOU!
Also, Ladies,
keep the "girls" nicely tucked away, and guys... mosttimes
women love those muscle pics, but not when networking for business!
You CAN,
however, upload all your family, friend and pet photos in your Facebook
photo album!
3.
Posting Comments:
Post only
positive comments and notes. Negativity has no place on Facebook...or
any other Social Networking Venue! Also, watch your 'tone of voice'.
We can't hear you chuckle or smile when you're typing your post so be
careful to use words which set a positive tone.
Make sure
you don't post something you might regret later! Remember, veryone can
hear you and eventually your mother will find out OR your employer!
Jobs HAVE been lost due to inappropriate language and behavior on Facebook.
Please don't
breakup with your significant other on Facebook.
When updating
your status don't always promote your business. If you are always selling
people will begin to shy away from you. Facebook is for building relationships
...which will eventually lead to business, but not until people begin
to know,
like and trust you. In between the casual chit-chat I might post and
update such as: "I just finished proofing my client's e-book" or "I'm
doing some Internet research for a client". This way I'm engaging in
small talk, yet people are learning about what I do for my clients.
Don't expect
to get unless you give. Give leads to others and then you'll get leads!
Simple!
Listen to
the people on your friend list. Respond to them appropriately.
Post things
which help people learn more about you. Be yourself and add value to
your presence.
DON'T TYPE
IN ALL CAPS! Did that sound as if I was yelling at you? Typing in all
caps tells people that you are shouting, upset with them and plain
old angry! It IS okay to cap words which you want to emphasize so it
pops out at the reader. This rule applies to email, blogging
and any other online print communications!
